California’s Progress on Retail Theft Underscores Critical Need for Investments in Crime Prevention

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Californians for Public Safety issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s November 6 press release, “Retail theft crackdown keeps delivering results: 25,675 arrests and $190 million in recovered stolen goods”:

“Governor Newsom, the California Highway Patrol’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force, and local law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to tackle organized retail theft prove that coordinated action creates results.

“However, retail theft is not the only issue plaguing California businesses. Other forms of property crime, including commercial, manufacturing, industrial, and rural, continue to negatively impact small and large businesses and communities alike. From copper wire theft that can disrupt utilities, to catalytic converter theft that sidelines entire fleets, to cargo theft that slows the supply chain, to rural theft that can hinder agricultural production, these crimes ripple far beyond immediate financial losses. Behind every damaged storefront or warehouse are business owners, employees, and community members who suffer economic losses, emotional stress, and disruptions to their livelihoods.

“C4PS is committed to supporting practical solutions for property crime prevention, including:

  • Reducing bureaucratic hurdles and delays for businesses seeking to install proven security technologies;
  • Strengthening relationships between property owners, local government, and law enforcement to share insights and feedback on crime trends and security challenges;
  • Highlighting how prevention is a cost-effective alternative to the impact of crime on employee well-being, community safety, and the larger business ecosystem;
  • Protecting local jobs and supporting economic growth by preventing the kinds of property losses that force businesses to cut staff, relocate, or close.

“To shift from crime reaction to crime prevention, State leadership must ensure that prevention efforts are prioritized, consistently funded, and applied across all forms of property crime. With meaningful investment, California can break the cycle and turn progress into long-term safety and stability.”
